How long does it take?
Typically 1-2 hours, but possibly much longer if the system has a virus infection or is in bad enough shape to require a system reinstall.

What is involved?
There are two causes of most computer slowness: The first is viruses/spyware/malware, and the second is unnecessary software running. Many programs you install will automatically set themselves to run in the background at all times — you may not even be aware that they are running. For instance, if you have ever installed any sort of instant messenger application (AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo, Microsoft Messenger, etc), you most likely have this messenger app running whenever the computer is on, whether you realize it or not. In addition, many programs you install will secretly install additional programs that you may not use or want (developers are usually paid to do this). Having all these programs running all the time will make your computer slower to startup, slower to shutdown, and slower to do pretty much anything.
When we optimize a system, the main thing weI do is to go and remove any programs that are not being used, and prevent programs from starting automatically when your computer is turned on. We also check for additional problems like low hard drive space, insufficient memory, multiple redundant anti-virus applications, severe disk fragmentation, etc.

How much of an improvement will I see?
This varies greatly. Anywhere from "a little" to "a lot". Let me put it this way: every reasonably modern computer should seem quite fast for day-to-day tasks. Even an older system—let's say one that is five years old—should be fairly fast for most tasks. Startup shouldn't take much more than two minutes, programs should open within a few seconds, there should be little or no delay when opening and browsing folders. Web pages should load fast, assuming you have a decent Internet connection.
We cannot guarantee that simply removing unneeded software will be enough to make your computer fast again. If your system has any virus infections, these will have to be dealt with in order to see any appreciable improvement. In some cases, the system is essentially beyond repair. This can be the case on older systems that have lots and lots of software installed over the years. Often multiple versions of the same software have been installed on top of each other and are virtually impossible to fully remove. System files are often damaged or missing. In these cases, a system reinstall will generally be required to make your computer run well again.
